Yours In The Struggle, 2015/2021

  • 'Yours In The Struggle' is a sonic encounter with South African musicians & poets more than twenty-five years after the collapse of apartheid. The sound piece features their personal memories and reflection on the role of music & culture as an instrument of protest in overcoming severe segregation, police harassment and censorship.
Regardless of how the policy of oppression was applied over the years, sound and spoken word always played a crucial role. It has been used to contemplate everyday life experiences and the political atmosphere in the country. Eventually, it gained momentum as a force to oppose the government and support the anti-apartheid cause in the 1980s.
Artists refused to be silenced. They took a stand fighting for the freedom of expression and multiplicity, even if their courage came with the risk of prosecution and the expense of career success until the transition to democracy in 1994.
Listening to the artist’s (hi)stories, conversations, sounds & materials were recorded in 2015. Those voices still resonate and carry the sound of resistance, which has kept its relevance as a medium of remembrance—weaving the fragments from the past into a dialogue with the entangled fabric of South Africa’s today.
