Invasion – Bachelor-Thesis 2021
My final work at BA Visual Communications Kunsthochschule Weissensee is an animated short film exploring the theme of female bodyhair removal. Amongst the various ways humans modify their bodies, body hair removal became so prevalent (not exclusively) in Western societies that its mere practice goes in general unquestioned, it is considered simply part of our everyday grooming practices. Perhaps at first glance shaving seems as trivial as brushing our teeth or cutting our toe nails, if we look at its manifold methods, history, political message, evolution as a norm, how it has been deeply ingraining our gender perceptions, to me it seems far more interesting than the rest of our body care habits.
The film reflects on the endless cycle of female bodyhair removal. A mundane everyday ritual turns into a surreal story. It portrays women removing their bodyhair and with each pluck or shave, hair grows out from the surrounding space. Hair becomes alive and just as in real life, after being removed, it returns.
