MI_CC: Media Interaction & Climate Change, 2020-2021
As part of an artistic research on climate change, post-colonial participation and media communication, the Weissensee Academy and the College of the Marshall Islands have started an exchange. Prof. Meitaka Kendall-Lekka has been teaching in Berlin in the DAAD-funded project since autumn 2020.
The European conceptions of areas like the Marshall Islands (in the broader sense of Micronesia) still consist of tourist visions of pristine beaches and indigenous cultures. The fact is that the habitats of the Pacific atolls and islands are suffering: on the one hand because of their colonial history (German colony until 1914) and on the other hand because of the US atomic bomb tests on Bikini Atoll and above all because of climate change. For an artistic practice it is important to perceive realities and to try out interactions (e.g. through media) for social models between utopia and dystopia.
Project funded by the DAAD.
