    Video in stage design

Play by Marlen Haushofer: "The Wall"

The goal of the course was to develop a staging concept that understands stage and video as interlocking forms of expression of a coherent artistic process already in the design.

The theatrical version of Marlen Haushofer's novel "Die Wand" provided an inspiring dramatic subject for the assignment. The text is written from the first-person perspective of a woman who, during an excursion into the mountains, is cut off from civilization from one day to the next by an invisible wall and must henceforth survive alone in nature. The inner state of mind of the protagonist and the unreal event of the invisible wall are occasions not only to deal with finding a stage space, but also to try out the medium of video on the theater.

Under the joint supervision of stage, direction/dramaturgy and video, the students developed staging concepts and visualized them in stage design models and self-produced videos. The resulting designs show a wide range of different styles and approaches of contemporary theater, from the illusionistic peep-box stage to the immersive theater form. What all the works have in common is that video was conceived as an integral dramaturgical and aesthetic component of space and performance.
